If it’s hip to be square, then the Zaptec Go is about as hip as you can get. In terms of design, it is simple… and square, but there’s no denying it is smart.

It’s worth noting that if the Zaptec Go floats your boat you can install up to three of these units in your home and, because Zaptec is so bullish about its build quality, there is a five-year warranty. The company says that because it has 60% fewer parts than other home chargers, there’s less to go wrong. It’s a Type 2, 7.4kW unit, and you can choose from six colours, all of which look decent.

While many manufacturers compete by adding more features or chasing lower prices, Zaptec has taken a different approach – build a charger that’s beautifully engineered, packed with smart technology and small enough to look good on almost any home.

Made in Norway, the Go has become particularly popular with installers thanks to its build quality and reliability. It’s also one of the few chargers that genuinely feels designed as a long-term piece of technology rather than simply another electrical appliance.

This is where the Zaptec Go really shines.

At just 24cm tall, it’s one of the smallest home chargers available today. Rather than dominating the front of your house, it blends into the background surprisingly well.

The front panel is available in a range of colours—including black, white, blue, green, grey and brown—allowing homeowners to match brickwork or exterior décor more closely than almost any rival.

Despite its compact dimensions, the charger feels reassuringly solid. The IP54 weather rating means it’s perfectly suited to UK outdoor installations, while the Scandinavian design gives it a premium feel that many competitors struggle to match.

Being untethered won’t suit everyone, but many buyers actually prefer the cleaner appearance, particularly if they don’t want a charging cable permanently hanging on the wall.

The Zaptec app is one of the best available.

Setup is straightforward, and once connected you can monitor charging, schedule sessions, control access, receive notifications and view charging history from your smartphone.

The charger is also compatible with solar installations, allowing homeowners to make better use of surplus solar generation, although its solar functionality isn’t quite as sophisticated as some dedicated energy-management systems.

Software updates happen automatically in the background, meaning owners regularly receive new features without needing to replace the hardware.

One area where competitors such as Ohme still hold an advantage is automatic integration with dynamic electricity tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go. Zaptec supports smart scheduling, but it isn’t quite as effortless for every supplier.

There’s no getting away from the fact that the Zaptec Go sits towards the premium end of the home charging market. Once installation is added, it’s unlikely to be the cheapest option.

However, what you’re paying for is refinement.

The hardware feels exceptionally well made, while the software receives regular over-the-air updates that continually improve functionality. Rather than becoming obsolete after a couple of years, the charger evolves with new features.

Its ability to charge at up to 22kW on three-phase supplies also makes it relatively future-proof. Most UK homes only have single-phase electricity, limiting charging to 7.4kW, but homeowners upgrading their electrical supply—or those installing in commercial settings—won’t need to replace the charger later.

If you’re looking purely for the cheapest way to charge your car, there are better-value options. But if you want a charger you’ll still be happy with in five or ten years’ time, the Zaptec Go begins to justify its higher price.

Safety is excellent.

The Zaptec Go includes built-in PEN fault protection, eliminating the need for an earth rod in most UK installations, alongside temperature monitoring and comprehensive electrical protection.

Because it’s untethered, you’ll need your own Type 2 charging cable, which adds a little to the overall cost if you don’t already own one.

One particularly impressive feature is the charger’s scalability. Multiple Zaptec chargers can communicate with one another to intelligently share available power, making it an excellent option for apartment blocks or households planning to install additional chargers in future.

VERDICT

The Zaptec Go isn’t the cheapest home EV charger -and it doesn’t try to be.

Instead, it focuses on doing everything exceptionally well. It’s beautifully designed, incredibly compact, backed by excellent software and built to a standard that feels genuinely premium.

While buyers who prioritise the very lowest running costs may prefer chargers with tighter energy tariff integration, anyone looking for outstanding build quality, future-proof technology and a charger that simply works day after day will struggle to find many better options.

It’s one of the most polished home chargers currently available, and it’s easy to see why installers recommend it so frequently.
