Overview

The Humax MX7 is a next-generation, intelligent home EV charger that pushes beyond basic charging with future-ready tech and smart energy features. Positioned as a versatile 7.4 kW wallbox suitable for most UK homes, the MX7 bridges everyday convenience with advanced capabilities such as vehicle identification, tariff optimisation, solar integration and hardware for future bi-directional charging (V2G/V2H)*.

Available in both socket and tethered formats (with 5 m or 7.5 m Type 2 cables), the MX7 comes with a solid 5-year warranty and a slick companion app that aims to put charging control in your hands.

*Important: V2G and V2H depend on vehicle support and grid/energy tariff participation – the charger hardware supports ISO 15118, but real-world use varies.

The MX7 strikes a clean, modern aesthetic that’s at home on contemporary UK houses or garages. It’s built around a robust ABS body with an IP65 weather rating on the socket version (IP54 on tethered units) and includes thoughtful touches like swappable front panels to personalise the look.

Despite its smart functionality, the housing remains compact and installer-friendly, keeping a low profile on walls. Weight varies by unit type – around 3.25 kg for socket models and up to about 5.4 kg for the 7.5 m tethered version.

Indicator LEDs have adjustable brightness, while built-in security – including a digital security lock and tamper-protect switch – adds peace of mind for external installs.

It’s an attractive charger for the price – not as stylish as say the Andersen products or the Simpson & Partners chargers, but it is smart and it is affordable.

The MX7’s headline is its intelligent charging ecosystem:

  • Vehicle Identification: Automatic EV ID recognition helps secure your charger and tailor charging behaviour.
  • Smart Tariff Optimisation: The system can prioritise off-peak electricity rates to save money, with integrations in progress for major UK energy tariffs.
  • Solar Integration: Works with home solar systems to use surplus solar energy before drawing from the grid.
  • App Control: The Humax Smart App lets you schedule sessions, start/stop remotely, view live status and check history.

Forward-looking features include hardware support for V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) and V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) via ISO 15118 communication. While enticing on paper, actual use depends on vehicle support, energy provider participation and local grid rules – something early adopters should verify.

On connectivity, Humax supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and some sellers list optional Ethernet and 4G – useful where Wi-Fi reach is weak. There is also and RFID card available for greater flexibility.

In the context of UK home chargers, the MX7 competes with established smart EVSEs by marrying core 7.4 kW charging with scalable tech. You’ll pay around £649–£699 (depending on cable/tethered option) before installation, putting it slightly above some basic rivals but justified by its feature set and five-year warranty.

For buyers focused purely on straightforward charging, cheaper options exist – but the MX7’s solar compatibility, tariff features and future potential make it appealing for tech-minded owners ready to invest in smarter energy management. Cost-conscious buyers should weigh whether the advanced features will be fully used in their household.

  • Supports all UK EVs/PHEVs with Type 2 charging up to 7.4 kW.
  • App control and scheduling add convenience and potential savings.
  • Solar integration helps maximise green energy use.
  • Built-in ISO 15118 & PLC make it V2G/V2H-ready, but real-world use depends on external factors.
  • Installation costs are extra (often £499+ for standard installs via Humax optional service).

Key considerations:

  • Advanced tariff integration isn’t fully launched yet – check provider support.
  • Features like V2G won’t benefit most users immediately without compatible vehicles and tariffs.

VERDICT

The MX7 is a compelling choice if you’re after a feature-rich, smart UK home charger that integrates with renewable energy and positions you for next-generation grid connectivity. While some of its headline capabilities are future-proof rather than immediately realised, the solid build, intuitive app and intelligent charging tools make it worth considering – especially for households with solar PV or dynamic energy tariffs.

If you’re simply after the cheapest 7.4 kW charger with basic smart controls, there are less expensive alternatives. But for long-term value and advanced tech, the MX7 earns its place near the front of the pack.
