Overview

Indra has quickly built a reputation as one of the UK’s most forward-thinking EV charger manufacturers, with a strong focus on smart energy, renewables and cost-effective home charging. The Smart LUX is their most compact home charger to date – and arguably one of the most discreet chargers you can buy in the UK right now.

Designed specifically for domestic driveways, the Smart LUX is a tethered, single-phase charger delivering up to 7.4kW – the maximum charging speed available to most UK homes. What sets it apart is not raw power, but how neatly it combines a slim, driveway-friendly form factor with genuinely useful smart features, all controlled through Indra’s well-designed app.

At roughly the size of a hardback book and under 80mm deep, the Smart LUX is aimed squarely at homeowners who want a charger that does the job without dominating the front of their property.

The Indra Smart LUX also features a unique lighting feature designed to make your charger friendly and easy to use. These change colour depending on your charging status, so you can easily see what’s happening without needing to open the app.

The Smart LUX is impressively compact, with a slim profile that makes it ideal for tight parking spaces or narrow driveways. Indra claims it is the slimmest home EV charger on the market, and standing in front of one, that claim feels justified.

It is a little ordinary in terms of design – if aesthetics are high priority you’ll probably go for a fancier unit but, despite its understated appearance, the Smart LUX is clearly built to live outdoors year-round. It carries an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, along with an IK10 impact rating, meaning it’s designed to withstand serious knocks. Indra even demonstrated its confidence in the sealing at launch by submerging a powered unit in water – a memorable way to visualise what “built for British weather” actually means in practice.

The tethered Type 2 cable is available in either 6m or 10m, giving plenty of flexibility for different driveway layouts. Colour options – Symphony Black, Indra White, Elgar Grey and Malvern Stone – are tastefully chosen and inspired by Indra’s home in the Malvern Hills, adding a subtle design story without being over the top.

The Indra app is well thought-out and intuitive, offering all the features you’d expect from a modern smart charger – and then some. Because the Smart Lux can be controlled via the app via WiFi (using 4G or broadband connection), or Ethernet you will have no connection issues. From the app you can:

  • Schedule charging by time window or “ready by” time
  • Automatically align charging with smart EV tariffs
  • Enable solar charging to prioritise surplus generation
  • Boost charging instantly when needed
  • View live charging status and progress
  • Lock and unlock the charger remotely
  • Access charging history and basic insights

Smart tariff integration is a key strength here. Rather than simply setting a timer, the Smart LUX can work directly with compatible energy suppliers to automatically charge during the cheapest and greenest periods. For users on smart tariffs, this removes much of the manual effort from cost-efficient charging.

Solar owners are also well catered for, with a dedicated mode that allows the charger to prioritise excess solar generation when available – an increasingly important feature as more households install PV systems.

The Smart LUX will set you back £1075 with a 6-metre cable and a £1175 with a 10-metre cable, while installation included as standard. This immediately simplifies the buying process and makes cost comparisons more transparent.

Where the Smart LUX really earns its keep, however, is in running costs. Pair it with a smart EV tariff – such as Octopus Intelligent Go – and charging can be scheduled automatically during the cheapest off-peak windows. Typical smart EV tariffs can be around 7p/kWh, compared with roughly 27–28p/kWh on a standard domestic tariff, and around 50p/kWh or more for public charging.

In simple terms, charging at home with a Smart LUX on a smart tariff can reduce EV running costs by around 70% versus a standard tariff, while also avoiding the much higher costs of public chargers. Rates vary, of course, but the savings potential is significant.

The Smart LUX is a single-phase, tethered charger only, so there’s no untethered or three-phase option. That won’t be an issue for most UK homes, but it’s worth noting if you’re future-proofing for higher-power setups.

The unit comes with a 3-year warranty, and installation is handled through Indra’s network of certified installer partners across the UK, which helps ensure a consistent end-to-end experience.

VERDICT

The Indra Smart LUX is a smart, thoughtfully designed home EV charger that prioritises real-world usability over gimmicks. Its ultra-slim design makes it one of the most discreet chargers available, while the robust weatherproofing inspires confidence that it will stand up to years of outdoor use.

Where it really excels is smart charging: full integration with smart EV tariffs, strong app control and solar-ready functionality make it an excellent choice for cost-conscious EV owners. The lack of an untethered or three-phase option may limit its appeal for some, but for the vast majority of UK households, the Smart LUX delivers exactly what’s needed – and does so with minimal visual impact.

If you want a compact, driveway-friendly charger that can significantly reduce your charging costs and quietly get on with the job, the Smart LUX is a very compelling option.
