Ohme ePod Review
Overview

This is a fantastic little untethered 7kW charger that allows access to the cheapest tariffs, so you stand to make a packet in savings on your energy bill. It’s compatible for Type 1 and Type 2 cables and you can adjust schedules and charge using either the app or buttons on the front. There’s no solar integration, however, but Ohme insists that this functionality is coming soon.

Visually, it’s not massively attractive when you compare it to other (more expensive) chargers, but it’s nice enough and its simplicity is worth celebrating. We have had no reports of failures so it’s pretty robust and all the materials used are high quality. The blue display that tells you charging status  separates it from the rest in that you can adjust the scheduling using the buttons on the unit without having to go into the app.

Is it easy to use?
It’s probably the best in the business. The app works like a dream, and you’ll almost look forward to checking out your charging costs, setting charging sessions, and also, with Dynamic Charging Technology, you get access to the best off-peak rates because it is compatible with all energy tariffs. Ohme chargers use live data from the grid to automatically reach the desired charge level within a schedule. The car is charged when electricity demand is lower and prices cheaper, while still meeting the desired charging goal. Because of that, you’ll have a wonderful smug feeling that you are somewhat beating the system in terms of what you will pay for energy costs. The Ohme ePod also has buttons on the front of the unit where you also start, stop and pause charging, which is handy if you are in a rush. ‘Play’ starts a smart charging session, while holding it for three seconds will set it to Max Charge for instant charging. The ePod features intelligent charging so you can tell how many miles you’d like to add within a target timeframe and it will do all that and charge at the cheapest rates. So, if you want your charge to reach that magic 80% battery capacity by 6am it’ll know how much to add and switch off once it’s hit the target. It’s also worth noting that the ePod works extremely well if you are on Octopus Agile and Intelligent Octopus Go energy tariffs, which allow you automatically charge your vehicle when electricity prices are low.  You can also set a price cap in the app ensuring that the ePod will not charge your EV unless prices fall below that limit.

What else do you need to know?
Standard installation is included, and you can expect excellent customer service as the Ohme team walks you through the process. You’ll complete a home eligibility form, a survey giving pictures and location of your fusebox, etc and then installation day will be set. The ePod is an untethered but, sadly, there is no lock to secure the removable cable unlike some other chargers that offer this function. The Ohme ePod is what we might call a ‘green charger’ because it is able to charge your vehicle when there is more renewable energy in the grid, but there is no solar integration.
It’s only available as a 7.4kW unit (no three-phase option), while the manufacturer warranty is three years. As is the norm, it has an in-built PEN fault device, so no need for an earth rod installation. It has a universal socket so Type 1 and Type 2 cables can be used. It’s pre-wired for dynamic load balancing which will prevent the main fuse in your home from tripping when you are charging. The Ohme ePod doesn’t connect directly to your mobile and has its own SIM card to connect to the UK’s mobile data network, using either 3G and 4G, and Ohme will cover the cost of that for the first three years. You also get over-the-air updates.

Well, absolutely. Like its stablemate, the Ohme Home Pro you can get a wide range of functionality and, more importantly, access to the cheapest tariffs. Effectively, the savings you’ll make if your vehicle is on that list will ensure the Ohme ePod pays for itself in the long run. In that respect, it’s a proper bargain that you should snap up (if, of course you like the look of the unit). It’s also £50 cheaper than the Home Pro.

VERDICT

There are three elements to this charger that make this a decent option. First up, it has automatic syncing to cheapest rates if you are on Octopus Agile or Intelligent Octopus Go tariffs for example. It’s a great money saver, but also, you’ll feel like you are doing your bit for the planet because it incorporates ‘green charging’ which can priorities the most renewable energy sources from the grid during a charging session. Then there are the three useful buttons on the front that allow you to start, stop or go to maximum charging without going into the app. The standard installation gives peace of mind and it’s comforting that there’s a reassuring walk-through process. Also, you can expect great customer service if you have any issues.
