Ohme ePod – quick review

Ohme ePod

Price: From £949 (fully installed)

What Wallcharger? Rating: ★★★★☆

Best for: Drivers who want access to the cheapest EV tariffs without paying for features they won’t use.

The two-minute verdict

If your priority is saving money every time you charge, the Ohme ePod is one of the smartest home chargers you can buy. It delivers exactly the same intelligent charging technology as the Ohme Home Pro but in a smaller, untethered package that’s typically around £50 cheaper.

It doesn’t have the Home Pro’s built-in display, and you’ll need to provide your own charging cable, but for many drivers those are compromises worth making. If you’re on Intelligent Octopus Go or another compatible smart tariff, the savings alone could pay back the extra cost over time.

First impressions

The ePod isn’t designed to turn heads, but that’s no bad thing. It’s compact, discreet and one of the smallest chargers on the market, making it easy to fit almost anywhere without dominating the front of your house.

The untethered design keeps things tidy when you’re not charging, although you’ll need somewhere to store your charging cable when it’s not in use. Build quality feels reassuringly solid, and while it lacks some of the premium styling of rivals like the Andersen A3 or Zaptec Go, it feels well engineered and built for everyday use.

Living with it

This is where the ePod really shines. The Ohme app remains one of the best in the business, making it incredibly easy to schedule charging, monitor costs and take advantage of cheap overnight electricity.

Rather than simply charging when you plug in, the ePod automatically works with compatible tariffs to charge when electricity is at its cheapest and, where possible, when there’s more renewable energy on the grid. Over-the-air software updates and built-in 4G connectivity also mean you don’t have to rely on your home’s Wi-Fi signal.

Is it worth paying more?

If you’re comparing it with budget chargers, then yes.

The real comparison, however, is with the Ohme Home Pro. The ePod offers almost identical smart charging functionality for a little less money, provided you’re happy without the built-in screen and tethered cable.

For drivers who already carry a charging cable in the boot anyway, it’s arguably the better buy. If convenience is more important, the Home Pro still has the edge.

What could be better?

The biggest omission remains solar integration, although Ohme has indicated this is planned. The untethered design also means there’s no built-in cable management or cable locking, so you’ll need to think about where to store your lead between charging sessions.

The three-year warranty is also shorter than some premium rivals now offering five years as standard.

Should you buy one?

If you’re looking for a no-nonsense charger that focuses on what really matters—saving money on your electricity bills—the Ohme ePod is difficult to beat.

It isn’t the most stylish charger available, nor is it packed with premium extras, but its intelligent tariff integration and excellent app make it one of the easiest chargers to recommend. For many households, it’s the sweet spot in the Ohme range.
